Microwaves are one of the most convenient smart appliances in every home. Some would even argue that modern living would not be complete without it.

It’s super convenient and easy to use. There are endless options of mouthwatering microwaveable meals ready to eat within a few seconds. You can also meal prep, which involves making ahead meals, cooking large portions by batch, freezing, and then popping them in the microwave to reheat any time you please. It’s no wonder microwaves are considered a godsend for anyone with a busy schedule.

Nevertheless, your microwave oven goes through a lot — from popcorn, stew, pasta, soups, pizza, even coffee! But it’s also frequently subjected to utmost neglect (don’t worry, no judgment here!), left uncleaned, and crusted with the messy splatters of last night’s dinners.

Your microwave deserves a little TLC as part of regular maintenance to keep it in excellent condition for years, like all kitchen appliances. And because it comes into contact with our food, it’s critical to clean your microwave to ensure it doesn’t become a breeding ground for disease-causing food-borne pathogens.

Got no clue how to clean your microwave? We got you! Here are some practical tips on cleaning your microwave, depending on how dirty it is. Let’s get started!

Wet Paper Towel

Got only five minutes? If spills and sauces have hardened up inside, you can clean your microwave using the wet paper towel technique. All you have to do is put several pieces of wet paper towels and microwave them on high for five minutes. This will create steam inside that will soften up the debris, making them easier to clean. Then, let the wet paper towels cool down, and use them to wipe down your microwave.

Water and Vinegar

Vinegar is a universal natural cleaning solution, so it’s not surprising to see its magic working to clean your microwave oven. Microwave a bowl filled with water and vinegar solution for three minutes. Aside from loosening up the grime inside, it’s also an effective way to get rid of unpleasant food odors. Use a rag or paper towel to give it a good wiping afterward.

Baking Soda

Stubborn gunk that just won’t come off? Make a baking soda paste by mixing it with a bit of water. Apply it to the caked food residue inside the microwave and leave it for five minutes. Then, scrub gently with a wet sponge or paper towel.

Dishwashing Liquid

Got time to deep clean your microwave? Start by microwaving a bowl filled with dish soap and water solution for at least three minutes. Let it cool down, and then using a sponge, scrub the hardened spills, concentrating on the door and the microwave ceiling, which gets a lot of splatters. Soap and rinse the glass turntable in running water. Wipe the exterior with a wet rag and dry with another wiping down using paper towels.
